Preparing for 2019 – NYS PCMH Recognition

Are you prepared for the changes that have occurred for Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) recognition? In 2018, New York State aligned with NCQA and going forward, all practices must now also meet New York core requirements in order to maintain or initially pursue PCMH recognition and qualify for financial incentives. The good news is that if you are primary care/pediatric practice in Erie, Niagara, Genesee, Orleans, Wyoming, Allegany or Cattaraugus counties, you can receive FREE transformation services through enrollment with New York eHealth Collaborative:

New York State Patient-Centered Medical Home (NYS PCMH)

As of 2019, all practices selected for the CPC + program in Erie County are now eligible for these services as well.

Services are provided by Strategic Interests LLC on behalf of New York eHealth Collaborative (NYeC). SI’s PCMH team includes Certified Content Expert (CCE), NCQA reviewer and practice transformation experience. If you are new to PCMH recognition, we will help you plan and prepare your practice throughout the steps. In all cases, we will help you understand the requirements, gather the data and submit prior to your expiration. For PCMH Level 3 practices, up to nine months of services are available. For PCMH Level 1 or 2 practices, or those new to recognition, 15 months of services are available.

For more information or to enroll, send an email to nyspcmh@strategicinterests.com or visit the PCMH section of the SI website at https://strategicinterests.com/nyshealthcare/.

Hospital Interoperability Increasing But Far From Universal

It’s been said that in healthcare, we make monumental changes at a glacial pace. According to an ONC report released this week, acute care hospitals have once again made an increase in their interoperability status versus last year. This nets out to a 2% increase in the number of hospitals that can receive patient summary of care records from other institutions, an increase of 6% for finding such records outside their health system and a whopping 12% increase in those who can integrate outside patient records into their own EHR. All told, however, only 41% of US non-federal acute care hospitals can send, receive, locate and integrate outside information – a number far too low to rush to high fives all around.

While the improvements are notable, there is still much work to do. Far too many hospitals have anemic data exchange policies and capabilities and nearly half have their EHR silo unable to show a complete patient record that includes outside care data. While we wish patients would remain within a single health system, geography, capabilities, and even travel schedules means this is often not the case.

Are you part of a hospital or health system who wants to improve your interoperability capabilities? Let Strategic Interests know. We would love to help design a suite of programs to help you achieve all the benefits an interoperable system provides.

SI Adds Epic Certified Clinical Informaticist to Skillset

Clinical informaticists (CIs) make key decisions during the electronic health record implementation and maintenance process that can affect the safety of patients and efficacy of providers. CIs bridge the gap between the practitioners and developers, builders and programmers. They use their knowledge about key workflows, the language to support key tools, and how to manage the health of a patient population through reports.

Epic Software, one of the largest hospital EHR companies, recently implemented a Clinical Informatics certification program in conjunction with University of Wisconsin – Madison. The purpose of this training is to provide knowledge of the integrated clinical health system, key functionality commonly used by clinicians, processes and terminology of building a variety of integrated Epic tools, and areas that drive reporting.

Strategic Interests is proud to announce that our Director of Clinical Services, Brett Kinsler, has joined only about 20 clinicians worldwide who have become Epic Certified Clinical Informaticists.

“Healthcare technology consultants are often positioned between the clinical people who are practicing healthcare and the folks who are responsible for changing software, implementing analytical tools, and maintaining workflows,” Kinsler said. “This certification will position SI to better help our existing clients who use Epic in their hospitals and health systems and hopefully will attract others who use Epic and want our help embarking on new projects.”

Why your organization might want to bring a clinical informatics consultant to the team? You want:

  • Ways to increase clinician satisfaction using technology
  • To improve clinical workflows to improve outcomes and patient safety
  • Smoother on boarding of new practitioners
  • Ease the connection between IT and operations

Whether you use Epic or another EHR, Strategic Interests can help you achieve your efficiency, effectiveness, and financial goals in healthcare.
